Drip around the handle or stem
Water at the stem can involve packing, a gland or bonnet, corrosion, worn internal parts, or damage caused by repeated operation. The valve type determines whether a service adjustment is appropriate or the complete valve should be replaced.
Leak at the inlet or outlet
Compression, threaded, soldered, press, and connector joints can release water where the valve meets the branch or fixture supply. Water from the body may also track to the lowest nut, so the first wet edge must be located.
Valve leaks after being turned
A stop that has remained open for years may begin seeping when the stem or packing is disturbed. Operation can also reveal internal deterioration, a weak connection, or a valve that no longer reaches a stable open or closed position.
Valve closes but water keeps flowing
A worn washer, damaged seat, failed cartridge or ball, debris, broken stem, or incorrect valve operation can prevent isolation. A downstream trickle must be distinguished from water stored in the line or supplied through another connection.
Handle is seized or spins freely
Corrosion, a stripped stem, broken internal parts, or a damaged handle can eliminate reliable control. Applying greater force can break the body or adjoining pipe, especially in a concealed or unsupported installation.
Corrosion or swelling at the valve
Rust, green deposits, cracked plating, mineral buildup, and deformation may reflect chronic seepage or exterior moisture. The adjacent pipe and connection must be evaluated before a new valve is attached.

A shutoff valve is valuable only when it can control water without leaking.
A small stem drip is not the only valve problem. The body may be cracked, an inlet joint may be corroded, the outlet connector may be distorted, or internal parts may no longer stop flow. Water can track around the casting and collect at the lowest nut. Dry observation through idle pressure and careful operation identifies which boundary fails and whether the valve still performs its isolation function.
Replacement planning begins with the upstream shutdown. A fixture stop is downstream of an apartment branch, riser, meter, or building main. If the local valve is the failed component, it cannot isolate itself for removal. The next valve must be located, accessible, authorized, and dependable. In managed properties, that can require super or management coordination, notices, access to mechanical rooms, and a controlled service-restoration sequence.
The pipe behind the valve also determines scope. A short corroded stub-out, spinning nipple, damaged threads, thin copper, or concealed transition may not support direct replacement at the same point. A longer pipe section or access opening can be necessary to reach sound material. That condition should be explained before a simple stop-valve request becomes a larger branch repair.

Adjust, rebuild, or replace
A serviceable packing or internal component may support repair when the body and connections are sound. Cracks, heavy corrosion, stripped stems, unreliable isolation, and non-serviceable designs favor replacement.
Fixture shutdown or building shutdown
A second local valve can sometimes isolate a small branch. When no dependable upstream control exists inside the unit, building staff may need to close a riser or larger zone.
Valve-only work or pipe cutback
Sound stub-outs and fittings support valve replacement. Thin, short, moving, corroded, or damaged adjoining pipe can require cutback to a reliable connection point.

One repaired valve does not certify every building shutoff.
The service can repair or replace the confirmed valve and included adjacent connections after an authorized shutdown is available. It does not guarantee inaccessible upstream valves, redesign building isolation, certify cross-connections, or establish code compliance and engineering condition beyond the defined work.
