The method is selected for the system being tested and the question still unresolved.
A useful finding identifies the symptom, systems considered, areas accessed, tests performed, operating conditions, observations, limitations, and the plumbing source supported by the evidence. If the source cannot be confirmed during the initial boundary, the next responsible action may be access to another unit, a longer observation period, a different test, or a limited opening—not a guess presented as certainty.
Repair planning follows the component. A concealed pipe failure may require a section replacement and pressure verification. A drain connection may require controlled discharge testing after repair. A fixture or appliance leak may be corrected at the assembly.
